The 43 Trees Project

Welcome To 43 Trees

In late October 2012 Super Storm Sandy unleashed a devastation that has not been seen around New Jersey in decades. Businesses and beaches, structures and infrastructure, habitats and homes all suffered from the destructive storm. Losses included thousands of trees that were uprooted, broken and destroyed.

As a tribute to those trees and in honor of the 43rd annual celebration of Earth Day on April 22, 2013, we enlisted the help of a wide range of artists and writers to help us create life narratives for 43 of these fallen trees. Although many of the artists have never visited Roosevelt Park, they all considered what the life, work, loves, hates, desires and beliefs of these trees might have been. They treat them as respected friends, they speak of their grace and they cherish them as loved ones.

And as these and all the other trees begin their return to the earth, we honor them and are reminded of our connection to them and the environment.
